A faithful Saturday in 2022, I was at my family friend’s. There was music, cheers, food, drinks and not to mention the hullabaloos of giving out our very own in marriage. I found a little opportunity to start a conversation about real estate because I am a real estate consultant. I was offered a seat.
Caually as I would, I sat down and the funniest thing happened. I found myself fall into the seat while my legs were flying in the air. Apparently, the cushion of the dinning seat is bad though, it looked fine and strong and I wasn’t warned on time.
The furniture still looked fine. It was made from old cedar wood so it’s still very strong to dump or thrash.
Every household have at least one of that furniture that is not functional any longer but still can’t be done away with. If this is relatable, then this article (solution) is for you.
UPCYCLING YOUR FURNITURE.
We’re mostly familiar with recycle and reuse of old things and that is really a good way of saving our planet from all the dangers we put it through while creating and thrashing things. For the purpose of this topic, we’re going to keep these furniture, make them functional and reuse them.
IDEAS FOR UPCYCLING YOUR FURNITURE
There are several options for dealing with old furniture that you no longer want or need;
Reupholster or Revamp furniture–
Total makeover of furniture is best left for the professionals because this process involves stripping off its fabric, cushion, springs, coil and every single thing that makes up that furniture and then redoing everything, replacing faulty ones and repainting it. This process takes quite a time to complete but the purpose of taking this step is to make the piece of furniture functional instead of getting rid of the piece.
Resell them-
Maybe you don’t want to get into the whole stress of revamping or trying to fix an old furniture, maybe you just want an entirely new look from what you’ve always had, then don’t just dump it outside of your house or in the basement or storage room, rather, sell it. Sell it and get another set that works for the look you’re opting for. You can sell it online or hold a garage sale. Always cut out your loses.
Donate it;
If the furniture is still in a decent condition but you don’t want to bother with selling it and you don’t it for any other purpose, you can consider donating it to a local charity organization li kth orphanage or motherless homes.
Repaint;
A fresh coat of paint can completely transform a piece of furniture. Choose a color that complements the room it will be in. Repaint them for a newer look and change the hardware.
Re-stuff cushion:
The cushion is the padded or stuffed part of the sofa and overtime, they get shrunken. You can get the filling changed or add more to it to make it better. While at that, you should also re-stuff the backrest and the armrest for that fresh look.
Repurpose via DIY’s:
A piece of furniture that might be serving a particular purpose can be used for another purpose via using some hacks to DIY its purpose. Get creative and repurpose your old furniture. E.g. a living room sofa could be repurposed for the patio or the courtyard, and an old dresser could be turned into a TV stand or storage bench/ console. Look for DIT projects online for inspirations.
Change faulty parts:
If it’s a minor fault like that of the dining seat, just change the cushion. It could be the leg, an armrest, anything.
Recycle them:
If the furniture is in a very bad state and it can’t be salvaged, consider recycling it.
Add new hardware:
This option is for furniture like cupboard, wardrobes, etc. they mostly have knobs and handles which are probably faded, rusted or are dysfunctional. You could replace old knob and handles with new ones to give the furniture a modern look. Choose unique hardware that can make your furniture stand out.
Throw away;
As a last resort, you could throw away or use them as source of fuel (firewood). However, this can only be the option if the furniture is no longer useable and cannot b redeemed through any of the above listed procedures.
Overall, refurbishing your old furniture can be a fun and creative project that can breathe new life into your home décor.

Awesome! This makes a lot of sense. Getting rid of my old furniture was not easy because I loved it so much, but eventually I did simply because I didn’t know that it could be made anew.

Very comprehensive!
I could vividly remember revamping an old piece of furniture (that was way older than I am) more than three times till the wood finally “gave out”… We tried selling it but the woodworkers, having inspected it, laughed and said that NO ONE on this planet would buy it even if it was sold at 100naira…that the only solution was to “dash it out”.
Ended up using it as firewood by the way… 😤
Although it can be disheartening when our efforts to revamp or restore something don’t yield the desired results and that the woodworkers didn’t see any value in the piece of furniture anymore, but that’s because sometimes certain items reach a point where they can no longer be salvaged. Using it as firewood might have been a practical solution in the end. At least it served a purpose in providing warmth / heat for meal.
wow! you revamped it three consecutive times? I assure you, you definitely got the wood’s worth
