SIMPLE YET ELEGANT –MINIMALISM DESIGN

What some don’t know is that minimalism is a healthy design. It’s  not only healthy design because of its effect on your wellbeing. It also helps you save money since you focus on getting what you need.

Minimalist design is known for its monochromatic neutrals and clutter free approach which makes it appear clean and calm. This design is not about little in a space but having all you need. Minimal designs mainly focuses on uncluttered space hence you can always incorporate your personality to the design. It doesn’t have to look a specific way. When thinking about minimal design, you think about using rare essentials to create a functional and practical space.

Minimalism as a design is not a new design, it has been there for centuries though it only became trendy of recent. This design is characterized with flat surfaces, neutral color, crisp lines, unpattern furnishings, less artworks, simplicity of shapes and neutral accent lighting.

Your space is where you go to shut out the whole noise after daily bustles and hustles but when it rather adds to the stress, it leads to depression and mental breakdown.

CHARACTERISTICS OF MINIMALIST DESIGN

LESS IS MORE

This principle focuses on needs not like or want. People get excited when something alluring catches their attention, and like a propeller, they’re pushed into making decisions, ones they don’t think through. For instance, trending designs that you found off the internet, the beautiful onyx vase that has a shine that made you gush or that wallpaper that you’ve seen in some spaces and you like it’s feel. It just can be anything really. The idea of minimalism is sticking to what you actually need.

CLEAN LINES

Minimalist design is easily given out by the clean lines that run through the whole space. Clean line doesn’t mean that the lines are clean and there’s such thing as dirty lines but it means that the architectural details like skirts and molds, the wall edges or the furniture used for the design all have a continuous line that runs round the space uniformly. These lines are aesthetic in themselves.

HONEST DESIGN

Minimalist design is about honesty and staying true to itself. This means that all the material used in the design or decoration of this space is authentic. No fakes of its kind. They’re sustainable in themselves. These materials like oak wood used in this design would be a hundred percent oak wood and not something synthetic oak wood look alike.

CONCRETE, STEEL AND GLASS MATERIAL

These three materials are the basic materials that minimalism in design was introduced with. This was due to the fact that that creators wanted to have a more functional and practical space to live in. The design was meant to help create a space that people can have peace, tranquility, and easily defeat stress and depression.

VISUAL DECLUTTER

When you talk about mental dysfunctionality you can’t skip visual clutter. This doesn’t seem like much but just as you can tell the difference between a well-kept room and an untidy room and how you feel about each room. I bet you don’t want to be ushered into the second room just for a minute, talk more of having a lifestyle made out of it. Imagine your football club kept loosing every single match (seven of them) in a marathon and all this happened in just a week, how would you feel? It’s just like reliving a nightmare every single day. What a torture! Nobody wants that, and that’s how visual clutter makes your brain feel, mentally stressed.  Minimal design is about decluttering and creating a space that helps you relax.

Most pictures of the minimal design you must have seen has same thing in common, they are not created from busy color palette. They are all neutral colors that makes the space achieve the clean look.

Minimal designs also avoid excessive use of home accessories, wall arts and patterns, this is to create a place that helps you relax as you should.

GENERAL PROBLEMS WITH MINIMAL DESIGN AND HOW TO SOLVE IT

People have condemned this design style severally, saying that it is sterile, cold, lifeless and dead. This is because the design sometimes appear empty when you abide strictly to the design principles. The truth is, it doesn’t have to be so. In order to create a minimal design that is not ‘’cold’’, here are a few tips:

ADD PERSONALITY

A line from my favorite movie POLICE ACADEMY 5 says “we’re merely stretching”

This doesn’t mean that you have to break the rules of the design. This simply means that now we know the rules, we can still crate the space you want without ruining a thing. This could be that onyx stone we talked about, or your patterned center rug, the books you love so much, whatever it is, just add a touch of your personality, something that defines you.

OPT FOR WARMER NEUTRAL COLOUR

For a space to be termed warm or cold, it all depends on the color used. This being said, your dream space doesn’t have to be sterile. You can always pop in warm neutrals that will make your space cozy and homely. In the end, your place is welcoming even while it’s a minimalist design.

FEW ACCESSORIES OR PLANTS

Also, in making your place welcoming and cozy, add a few accessories like pictures, artwork or any statement piece that keeps the space interesting.
